About Talhado
Talhado Fishing Enterprises is a South African fishing company established in 1988 to pursue the demand for South African squid in the international market.
Talhado squid is handline caught and frozen within 3 hours to ensure a quality product for which Talhado is known for. The product is caught under the strict conditions of HACCP Regulations and adheres to the SABS standard.
Talhado produces 2000 tons of good quality squid per season and enjoys approximately 20% of the South African squid market. The product is shipped in refrigerated containers from the Company’s cold store facility in the Port Elizabeth harbour. The company owns 2 EU approved processing and cold room facilities based in Port Elizabeth and Humansdorp.
Every product carrying the Talhado mark is guaranteed to be of the highest quality. Talhado’s successful product is affectionately known as the “squid in the yellow box.”
We pride ourselves in giving back to the community and spend a large amount of money on corporate social investment. Such projects are The Fishing Academy, situated in the Port Elizabeth Harbour and Talhado Children’s Haven set up in 1999 in St Francis Bay, which is home to many of the squid fisherman and their families.
Talhado Squid is marketed through agents and distributors in Europe and the Far East. The distributors target restaurants, small retail outlets and outdoor markets. The product is aimed at a sophisticated market that prefers a fresh product that is not contaminated with chemicals. This market prefers the “chewiness” of our product with its natural flavor.
